Arrest warrants have been issued for Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30, on charges of murder and attempted murder. A 14-year-old boy, a mother of two, a 77-year-old widow and an emergency service worker have been identified as some of the dead. At least 18 other people have been injured in a series of knife attacks in an indigenous community and a nearby town in Saskatchewan province. It is one of the deadliest mass murders in Canadian history. In a televised statement, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau described the stabbings as “shocking and heartbreaking.” “This kind of violence, or any kind of violence, has no place in our country,” he said. “The priority is keeping you and your loved ones safe, so please be careful. “If you see anything, if you have any information, call 911 to share it. “Unfortunately in recent years, tragedies like these have become all too common.” The two suspects were seen in a black Nissan Rogue, which was located more than 200 miles south of the area where the stabbings occurred. A woman posted a photo of the vehicle on Facebook with the caption: “These are my brothers [sic] vehicle they took when they entered our home this morning in the James Smith Cree Nation. “We couldn’t care less about the vehicle, but let these monsters be caught.” Image: The suspects were seen traveling in a Nissan Rogue SUV Police have not released a possible motive, but a statement from an indigenous group suggests the stabbings may be drug-related. Miles Sanderson has been “unlawfully at large” since May, when a local crime appeal was issued in an attempt to trace him. He was serving a nearly five-year sentence for offenses including assault and robbery and was given probation but then disappeared, according to CBC News. Who were the victims? Some of the victims appear to have been attacked at random, while others are believed to have been targeted, officers said. One of the victims was named as Lana Head, whose former partner posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook. Michael Brett Burns, who had two daughters with Mrs Head, wrote: “You will be greatly missed Lana. Thanks for the beautiful daughters and granddaughters. Love.” Image: Lana Head, mother of two, killed in mass stabbing Speaking to Aboriginal Peoples TV, Mr Burns said: “It’s sickening how incarceration, drugs and alcohol can destroy so many lives. I am hurt for all this loss.’ Ivor and Darryl Burns said their sister Gloria was among the dead. “She was butchered … with her friend and a 14-year-old boy, all three of them,” Ivor Burns said. Gloria was an emergency responder who went to a crisis call and died after being caught up in the violence, Darryl Burns said. Another victim was named as Wes Peterson, a 77-year-old widower, described by locals as a “good, kind-hearted man” who “wouldn’t hurt a fly”. His grown grandson was in the basement at the time and called police, a neighbor said. The attacks took place at several locations on the James Smith Cree Nation and the village of Weldon, with police investigating 13 crime scenes. “We will not stop until they are taken into custody” In a briefing Monday, Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said the two suspects “remain at large” despite “continuous, unrelenting efforts” to locate them. “We will not stop this investigation until we have these two safely detained,” he said. “We’re sure someone out there knows where these two are and has information that would be valuable to the police. “I urge you to contact your local police service to let us know. “There’s a lot of sadness, there’s a lot of stress in our province and in our communities.” Bobby Cameron, head of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, said: “This is the disaster we face when harmful illegal drugs invade our communities and we demand that all authorities take instructions from their chiefs and councils and members to create safer and healthier communities for our people.” A large number of people were in the area as the sold-out Canadian Football League game on a bank holiday was being played in nearby Regina.
