The Metropolitan Police announced the death after earlier saying it had been referred to an investigation into the pursuit by specialist firearms officers in Lambeth. A suspicious vehicle was stopped after routine contact at 9.51pm on Monday in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill, Lambeth Police said. A police weapon was fired and a male passenger in the vehicle suffered a gunshot wound. The man received first aid from officers at the scene before being taken to hospital, with London Ambulance Service and London Ambulance Service called for assistance. “A man has died after a police firearm was discharged following a vehicle chase in Lambeth,” the Met said in a later statement. He noted that the man died at 12.16am, before adding that as per protocol the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct had been contacted. No other injuries have been reported, although roadblocks and road closures are in place while police investigate.
