According to a statement by Ukraine’s defense ministry, the death toll of Russian soldiers killed in combat since February 24, when Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to invade, stands at 50,150. The Ukrainians claimed that Monday, September 5, was another day of heavy Russian casualties, with 350 soldiers killed in a 24-hour period. Most of yesterday’s casualties were attributed to fighting in and around the southern city of Kherson, where Kyiv is launching a major counterattack against positions held by the Russians. Since the start of the war, Ukrainian forces have also destroyed 2,077 Russian tanks, 236 aircraft, 207 helicopters and 4,484 armored vehicles, the ministry claimed. Estimates by Ukraine’s armed forces have not been verified, with Western sources normally suggesting the Russian death toll is around half that.
