Drivers were stuck on I-95 in Providence for their evening commute as flooding made the highway impassable. Many cars were flooded along with the highway. Police are said to have helped those trapped inside. Others were seen seeking shelter in the median on I-95. The flooding also forced officials to close other roads within Providence as heavy rain turned roads into rivers, including Route 10. The heavy rainfall is said to have caused the collapse of a building within the city. Providence police said no one was inside at the time of the collapse. Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee urged residents to “avoid all unnecessary travel” amid flooding in the state. A freezing cold front covering the northeast produced a wide area of significant thunderstorms on Monday. Many cars were stuck on the freeway amid the storm that caused people to take refuge in the center divider on I-95. Fox WeatherPolice had to help people get out of their cars, many vehicles were flooded along with the highway. Fox Weather Flood watches extend from coastal Maine through Boston and New York, into Pennsylvania and through much of the Appalachian and Ohio Valleys, reaching into northern Alabama and northwestern Georgia. In total, just over 80 million are under a flood warning on Monday. Scattered thunderstorms remain in the forecast throughout the week, with some rainfall reaching 3-5 inches by the end of the week.
