Reddit user u/Unlikely-Strategy596 shared a story on the forum on Saturday, asking, “AITA (I’m an a-hole) for not giving up my seat on a plane so a family can all be together?” In the post, which received over 9,500 upvotes and thousands of comments, the passenger explained that he had taken a return flight from Greece, which he described as “extremely hectic”. They continued: “I’ve booked my ticket specifically to be closer to the front of the plane so I can be closer to the gate when it’s time to get off. I personally hate traveling, so I spent a little more money to be closer.” However, when the Redditor boarded the plane, a family of four approached them to ask if they could switch seats. The Reddit user described the incident: “Normally I’d be fine with this, but changing points would mean moving back 20 rows down, which leaves me in the lurch and not getting my money’s worth. I turned it down and I said I would like him to keep my place.” The family did not take well to the passenger’s refusal to move. According to the post, “the woman said I was an a-hole and I should just give up my seat so she could sit with her husband and kids.” The passenger said he replied, “Respectfully, ma’am, your travel issues are none of my business. I maintain the position I paid for.” The post went on to claim that the woman continued to “make a scene” in front of other passengers. However, she reportedly finally gave in and sat down, while her husband apologized for her behavior. Commenters answered the question below the post (AITA?) and overwhelmingly took the poster’s side. “NTA (not the a**hole). If we were really going to sit together, why didn’t they ask the people 20 rows back if they would like the best seats in front? They would still all be together,” said one commenter. Another said: “There’s nothing wrong with asking, but it sure is a hole to make a scene.” It follows another passenger on Reddit who is slamming an airline for changing their plane seats so a mother and baby can sit together. Taking to the online platform, the man said he and his partner had paid extra to book seats at the front of the cabin as it was a transatlantic flight and “we wanted to be more comfortable”. The man claimed that his seats were changed a few days before the trip and that when he reached the airline’s customer service, they said that the seats had been changed as a mother and baby needed them.
