“It Happened Again”
The devastating incident at Come By Chance on Friday has many recalling a similar tragic event 24 years ago and determined to ensure workers are kept safe.
Two workers were killed and another injured as a result of a fire/explosion at the refinery in March 1998. Charges were brought under Public Safety and Occupational Health and Safety Acts at the time.
The details of what happened Friday at Come By Chance are now the subject of a police and separate internal investigation, according to Steelworkers Union spokesman Glenn Nolan.
It indicates that there is a process that needs to be followed and it will take time to find out exactly what happened.
Eight people were injured — six of whom remain hospitalized — in an explosion or fire at the facility late Friday afternoon.
Nolan says the incident has had a devastating impact on workers, their families, co-workers and witnesses to the incident, and much work needs to be done to determine the root cause and ensure workers remain safe.
Overcome with emotion, Nolan says “employees shouldn’t have to deal with this.”
