Just as an organizer cut the ribbon at the ceremony in Kinshasa’s Mont-Ngafula district, the bridge buckled, both of its handrails snapped, and the central section fell into a stream a few meters below. Spectators shouted with apparent glee as the VIPs struggled to climb out of the crumpled wreckage. No one was reported injured in the incident. One of the last people to climb free was a man in military fatigues and dark glasses holding an unopened bottle of champagne, other footage widely shared on social media showed.
