Britain’s Queen Elizabeth was forced to cancel a planned virtual meeting with ministers on Wednesday after doctors advised her to rest, a day after the 96-year-old monarch appointed Liz Truss as the country’s new prime minister. “After a full day yesterday, Her Majesty this afternoon took medical advice to rest,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “This means that the Privy Council meeting that was due to take place this afternoon will be rescheduled.” The Queen is currently at her home in Scotland, Balmoral Castle, where Boris Johnson officially resigned as prime minister on Tuesday and shortly after, where Truss was named his successor and the 15th prime minister of Elizabeth’s reign. The monarch has been suffering from what Buckingham Palace called “episodic mobility issues” since late last year, which have forced her to cut engagements and cut back on public appearances since then. Buckingham Palace did not provide further details about the Queen’s health, but said her doctors’ latest advice did not involve hospitals. He will remain at Balmoral, the palace said. The virtual Privy Council meeting would see Truss sworn in as First Lord of the Treasury, as well as the swearing in of new cabinet ministers and their appointment as privy councillors, if they did not already have that role. Last week, the Queen was forced to miss the Braemar Highland gathering in Scotland for the first time since she ascended the throne 70 years ago due to mobility problems.
